I would like to personally welcome each one of you to the regional conference 2019; Woman and Children First. It is an exciting time for us to address Obesity as a pathway to better health as we continue to grow and build on our capacities, while adapting, but yet highly motivated and responsive to the obesity epidemic. A collaborative work between the Ministry of Health represented by the National Diabetes and Endocrine Center (NDEC), Oman Diabetes Association (ODA) and the World Obesity Federation (WOF) to conduct this conference aims at confronting this emerging challenge at the regional level with special focus on women and children. We are dedicated to bring inspired health care professionals like you to such a forum to ensure that we keep you updated with the latest advances in care of these two patient categories.
Let me give you an idea of what you should expect and what we hope to achieve by the end of this scientific endeavor. You will have a wider understanding of the Global perspectives of the challenges facing obesity management in women and understand how this is influencing their physical and mental health. Moreover, eminent speakers are going to unfold the course of life of childhood obesity as early as prenatal and early infancy to epigenetics. We will inform you of nutrition policies used in obesity prevention with examples from around the World. We have assigned a full session completely dedicated to obesity clinical management in adults, addressing the opportunities and the challenges and the ways to overcome the barriers and weight regain. Similarly, speakers will explore obesity in young children and adolescent and state of art lectures will elaborate on the medical and surgical modes of treatment as well as useful psychological interventions. The patient is our center of care who should be listened to, that is why representatives of them will be heavily present to hear their perspectives and actively enrich the conference discussions.
The scientific committee enriched the conference with two parallel sessions with four interesting topics that focus on the special needs of physicians, dieticians and health counsellors. They are covering lifestyle interventions, principles of dietary counselling, tips for patient engagement and a workshop on comprehensive management of obesity using all available medical management tools. The conference will give you an opportunity to set your mind while actively participating in the concluding session debating which is better, bariatric surgery or medical approaches in preventing and reversing type 2 diabetes.
Together, we are continuously transforming the way we offer our services to patients with obesity. We do this by keeping ourselves up to date with latest clinical trials, the recent research outcomes and the use of new medical and pharmacological technologies. I am very proud of the accomplishment made so far at the local level as well as at the regional level and I am positive that this conference will be an addition in this track. Finally, it is a lifetime opportunity for our colleagues from outside the country, to discover the treasures of Oman and indulge in the serenity of the special and unique weather of the south, so remember to save some time in your itinerary.
So, come and join us and make this regional conference 2019 “Women and Children First” a memorable learning experience that will have impact on us yet for many years to come.
